Assumption Cathedral Bangkok

Assumption Cathedral is one of the oldest churches and is considered the centre of Catholicism in Bangkok, Thailand. Located near the Chao Phraya River, this church is a top tourist attraction for its unique and ancient architecture. The church was built by the French missionaries who arrived in Thailand during the 17th century. A French architect designed the original structure of the cathedral by materials which he imported from Italy and France. Later, the structure was modified and replaced during the 1900s, after being damaged in the Second World War, by the Italian architects.

The cathedral’s exterior design with red bricks sets it apart from any other buildings in Bangkok. Furthermore, its unique architecture influenced by the French made it seem like a piece of Europe or “Little Europe”. The Cathedral is known for its buttresses, arcades, columns, piers and the semi-circular arches for openings. It is also considered a place for performing sacred festivals and ceremonies and a place of worship. Not only that, but also the Cathedral is used to celebrate many functions like priests and bishops, ordination of deacons and the centre of Catholics. You can reach it from Saphan Taksin BTS station that stops in Charoen Krung Road. You will then walk down Charoen Krung Soi and you will find the Church. However, if you came from Oriental express boat pier, walk from the river straight and then turn right and then turn left and you will find the church.
