The Seashell World

A seashell collector by the name Somchai Patamakathin and his brothers opened Phuket Seashell Museum in 1997 for their love of seashells. Located right by Rawai beach, is the astonishing museum that displays seashells from worldwide. Most of the seashells you will find here were collected from the local area from Thai waters. The collectors extended their love for seashells and even went overseas to collect some unique shells you will see here. There is a display of some unique and rare specimens that are hard to find on the usual beach areas. It is fascinating to see a variety of seashells neatly displayed. Kids fall in love with the place too. When you arrive at Phuket Seashell museum, the collection of the shells is displayed on the underground floor of a large building. Every display is clearly labeled in English and Thai languages. Take a self-guided tour and from the descriptions, there is so much to learn. Study the history and the types of shells available. You will be amazed by the comprehensive collection of seashells that is housed here.

Impressive Collections

The museum houses some impressive collections that is a must see. They include the world's biggest golden pearl which is said to be 140 karats. You will also see a shell that weighs a whopping 250 kilograms! Other striking collections include a heavy shell with varied patterns known as the stout-spine murex and also tiger cowries. Apart from the shells, there are large old sedimentary rocks. They contain shell fossils representing the earliest forms of life on earth. The upper floor of the building is a storage area with a huge gift shop selling seashell products and souvenirs. Here, you will definitely get something shell themed to buy. Some of the inviting products are seashell jewelry, shell crafted arts, key chains and even indoor house décor made with seashells. Phuket Seashell Museum is home to a variety of pearl items.
